MAURICIO ALVAREZ (COLOMBIA)
I was born and raised in Cartagena amidst afro colombian and caribbean music and since childhood I was mesmerized by dance. Before I knew it, dance had become a big part of my social life and as I moved to Russia it became my ultimate passion and profession.
I have studied the different styles of salsa intensively throughout my life, of which the crossbody styles are dearest to me – dancing them, I feel like a fish in the water. In addition to salsa I get endless amounts of energy from urban caribbean rhythms, from which Dancehall Reggae has become my great passion during the past few years.
I have taught in Finland since 2008 and I have enjoyed teaching my amazing students. As a teacher I want to emphasise the endless richness and variety of dance and the expression of music in dance – I want to transmit the love of dance and music to people. I hope that when dancing they find a place where they can develop their skills and confidence and can enjoy dancing as a getaway from everyday life. Dancing is a great way to find happiness.
AINO HUJANEN (FINLAND)
I have been dancing my whole life and already as a small child I felt a strong attraction towards Latin American and Caribbean music. After doing some ballet, hip hop and ballroom dancing I found salsa in 1998 and have been hooked ever since.
I’ve been teaching dance since 2003 in Tampere and around Finland and also in Salsa Festivals around Europe (Tallin, Riga, Vilnius, Croatia). I study music anthropology in the University of Tampere specializing in Latin American and Caribbean music and dance cultures.
I enjoy all styles of salsa and want to be able to dance with anyone without restrictions. I also love dancing merengue, bachata, reggaeton and african dances. As a teacher I want to encourage everyone to find mental and physical strength from dance that will help to battle all the everyday challenges we face in life. My classes are a combination of dance technique, self expression, fun and crazy energy. I also aspire to make my students more aware of the cultural background of the dances.
